The seal to be copied is carefully oiled with a clean oil, the saucer

filled with plaster of paris is then applied, and when nearly set, with-

-draw, and a perfect cast of the seal is tot. Lost P.08 or establish-

-ments dealing with letters have a complete set of all official seals.

To open the seal, a flat platinum blade, heated almost to whiteness, is

held over, or passed over the seal until it is quite melted, when the

flaps are gently lifted up so as not to disturb the original set of the

wax of this as little as possible. If it is thought that the flaps of

the envelopes have been previously gummed then they are well steamed

before operations on the seal begins. This takes much longer to des-

-cribe than it would take an expert operator to do the job.

All documents requiring it are photoed and this can be done

for despatches in a few minutes, codes and such like can be unbound,

photoed and rebound as before in a few hours, never longer than a night.

Of course the photos are taken by flash process as this is found the

most effective, as well as most convenient.

You may take all the above as absolutely authentic.

Remember keeping keys on one's person during day, and in pockets or on table at night is no positive safeguard. If they are on th ஷீ job and have nobbled suitable agents, no cat will watch a mousehold more

Another dodge by which some idea as to contents or import of a letter

may be got, is to render the back of an envelope so transparent that contents of document just opposite it and within envelope can be read. The surface is freely wetted with absolute alcohol and the paper then becomes diaphanous. The spirit/volatilizes and leaves no trace.
